TIKKURILA PUBLISHES CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY REPORT FOR 2004
In 1992, Tikkurila Oy committed itself to the Chemical Industry's international Responsible Care programme. As evidence of this commitment, the company has published an environmental report annually since 1993 and a corporate responsibility report since 2001. For 1995, 1997, 2000 and 2003, a more extensive report, an EMAS statement was prepared. The latest report (2004) can be found in pdf format at www.tikkurila.com.
During all this time, our fundamental approach to HSE issues has remained the
same:
- Tikkurila strives to abide by the principles of sustainable
development in all its operations.
- The inclusion of environmental, health
and safety considerations is an important part of the organization?s overall
approach.
Only a few companies with a long track record in responsible operations pull off sudden major achievements. This is also the case with Tikkurila, as shown by the indicators measuring the positions of the progress made on the first three fronts - product safety, the eco-efficiency of production and logistics processes, and financial prosperity - of Tikkurila's Corporate Responsibility Programme in 2004. Progress itself is in the right direction and we can expect further improvement on this front.
The accident frequency meant a temporary setback to the good progress otherwise made with employee well-being, the fourth front in our programme. There was a regrettable rise in the LTA1 (Lost Time Accidents) figure we use as an indicator. We stepped up efforts on projects already initiated to improve industrial safety. These are certain to improve the situation and a spirit of thought and consideration is already in evidence at Tikkurila.
Distinct targets, development indicators and a methodical approach are always inherent in profitable operations. We need to be able to identify the core aspects that we can develop in various micro areas and functions - processes - to continually enhance our operations. We also need to systematically track operational development and be able to take corrective action as required. Above all, we need the expertise and active contribution of each and every Tikkurila employee.
