Surfactant leaching

Problem - Surfactant leaching
A concentration of water-soluble ingredients appear on the surface of dispersion paint, either as tan or brown spots or as glossy patches.

Possible causes

  • Paint is applied in cold and humid conditions or just before rain. Long drying times cause leaching when water-soluble ingredients separate and collect on fresh paint before it is completely dry.
  • Dark paints containing large quantities of colourants leach easily.

Solution

Avoid painting in the late afternoon if the weather turns cold or humid. If leaching occurs in the first few days after painting, the water-soluble residue may be easily rinsed off. Residue usually disappears in about a month and does not affect durability.
