Warsaw Central Railway Station gets a facelift with Tikkurila products

Many tourists and football fans will visit Poland to watch the European Football Championship games in 2012, and many of them will travel by train. For ensuring a nice welcome for travellers, the renovation of the Central Railway Station in Warsaw was started in September 2010. According to the schedule, the main hall will be ready by May 2011, the new façade by October and the platforms totally renovated by December.

The construction of Warsaw Central Railway Station, the most important railway station in Warsaw, began in 1972 and was completed in 1975. The original design was innovative but was altered many times, adversely affecting the quality of work and the functionality of the station. Also, haste further degraded the quality, necessitating immediate repairs, which continued through the 1980s.

Modern outlook with Tikkurila paints

PORR Polska, a full-service provider for modern construction industry, is responsible for the current renovation project.  The radical ‘facelift’ of Warsaw Central Railway Station will cost 22 million zloty (5.4 million euro).

Most of the painting work will be done with Tikkurila industrial paints. The structures under the ceiling inside and outside the railway have been blast cleaned and painted with the single-coat Temadur SC 20, colour RAL 9016.  The façade panels inside and outside the building have been protected with the durable Temadur HB 50, colour RAL 840-M, while also changing the colour from brown into modern graphite grey.

Temporary solution

After the renovation the main railway station in Warsaw will become a comfortable, passenger friendly place.  The whole station will be adjusted to the needs of the handicapped.

The renovation is, however, only a temporary solution for the Euro 2012 games. The Warsaw city government is contemplating demolishing the station and replacing it in eight or ten years.  Soon they will announce a contest for the design of a new Warsaw Central Railway Station.
