Water-borne Akvilac FD range of lacquers gaining popularity

11.9.2015
Tikkurila’s range of one-component high-performance water-borne lacquers has been complemented by two new products, Akvilac FD-J 35 and Akvilac FD 70, which also add new gloss levels to the offering.

Akvilac FD 25, Akvilac FD-J 10 and Akvilac FD-J 25 lacquers have been on the market since 2013, and they are already widely used on fast production lines for wood-furniture and joinery industries in many countries. Some customers are planning to transfer their lines from solvent-borne products to water-borne.

To respond the growing needs and to make the range broader, Tikkurila has launched two new products: Akvilac FD-J 35 and Akvilac FD 70. These lacquers have similar properties as the already existing products. They have excellent wood wetting and leveling properties as well as excellent blocking and chemical resistance, but different gloss levels. Both lacquers can be used for various wooden applications such as furniture, panels, moldings, book shelves and doors.

Environmentally friendly with extremely low VOC values

All these one-component lacquers belong to the Akvilac FD range, which is based on new water-borne technology. Specific features of these products are not only forming a very clear film with good resistance but also their environmental aspects. Low VOC values are important for workers, who are daily dealing with Akvilac FD lacquers as well as for consumers.

Akvilac FD-J 10, FD-J 25, FD 25 and the new FD-J 35 lacquers are M1* approved products. Materials have been tested for their organic compounds, formaldehyde, ammonia and carcinogenic substances. These lacquers can be used e.g. for children’s furniture and toys, and for products intended for consumers who are very sensitive to harsh chemicals.

M1* Building material emission classification for indoor use. M1 certification is granted by RTS, the Finnish Building Information Foundation, to materials approved in laboratory tests.

Natural warmth of wood with a hard surface

The brilliantly clear lacquer film retains the warmth and natural character of the wood. Due to their transparency, the Akvilac FD lacquers are also excellent for use on top of dark stain colors. The very hard surface looks like one made with a solvent-borne lacquer, and its scratch and chemical resistance is very good. The lacquer film resists normal household chemicals very well, and even staining liquids such as coffee give acceptable results.

With a spreading amount of 2x80 g/m², these lacquers fulfill the requirements of the chemical and surface resistance classification R2 according to the IOS-MAT-0066 IKEA Specification.

Technology and application

The Akvilac FD lacquers are very fast drying and therefore an ideal solution for fast, automatic spraying lines with convection plus IR-drying units as well as for hand spraying and room-temperature drying.

At the same time, all these lacquers have excellent wood wetting and leveling properties. The lacquered surface is dry to sand and also stackable after 3–5 minutes of drying time, when elevated temperatures such as 40–50°C and IR drying are used.

The Akvilac FD-J range was developed especially for the joinery industry, and it offers a more economical solution for fast production lines.

The Akvilac FD 25 and 70 lacquers have a higher solids content and therefore form a thicker film compared to that made with the Akvilac FD-J lacquers.

The lacquers are supplied in a ready-to-use viscosity for spraying application and can also be used for dipping application when thinned 25–30% with water. They are also suitable for use as priming lacquers before applying water-borne UV lacquer Luminol Clear 25, making the lacquer system more economical. All the lacquers are tintable with Akvi Tone colorants and have a wide range of colors.
