We have a lacquered panel ceiling in the living room. Over time, it has darkened and turned yellow. The room looks pretty gloomy, and I would like to have a transparent light-coloured ceiling that leaves the wooden surface visible. Can it be done?
Darkened, lacquered surfaces can be made lighter, but an old panel cannot be made to look new unless the darkened surface is planed. This is quite a complicated procedure.

You can treat the surface with tinted Paneeli-Ässä (Panel Ace) Lacquer, which is available in a matt or semi-matt finish. Five degrees of lightness are available, and your paint dealer has a sample display board. Please remember that the colour samples have been applied to a new, light wooden surface. Test the colour in an unobtrusive spot before applying it to the whole ceiling.

The finish can be affected by the transparency of the darkened wooden surface, the degree of lightness of the lacquer, and the number of coats applied. To avoid any visible seams, apply the panel lacquer in bands a few panels wide along the whole length of the ceiling. The Interior Lacquer Colour Card includes a range of interesting colours that are equally suitable for older surfaces in white, for instance.
