Generally, it is advisable to avoid spending prolonged periods of time in rooms in which alkyd paint or lacquer have been freshly applied to large surfaces (ceilings, walls, cabinetry, sets of drawers) for about one week. With smaller surfaces, 24 to 48 hours should be enough.
When using standard waterborne paints and lacquers, the room should be left until the following day. If low-emission M1 paints are used, a period of 4 to 6 hours is recommended.
Allergy sufferers, expectant mothers and small children should avoid such spaces for longer periods.
