Tikkurila’s tintable stone coating protected by a patent
The National Board of Patents and Registration of Finland has granted a patent for the consumer product Yki Aitokivi Real Stone and the professional product Finngard Stone coating. Stone coatings designed for indoor use are marketed under the name of Tunto Stone.
The National Board of Patents and Registration of Finland has granted a patent for the water-borne tintable stone coating introduced to the markets by Tikkurila Oyj in 2011. The patented technology for manufacturing stone coatings for outdoor use is applied to the consumer product Yki Aitokivi Real Stone and the professional product Finngard Stone coating. Stone coatings designed for indoor use are marketed under the name of Tunto Stone.
The patent owner has the right to prevent others from exploiting the patented invention commercially by manufacturing, selling, using or importing the patented product, or by using the patented method. The recently patented method, invented by Researcher Jani Rutanen of Tikkurila, combines a product containing natural stone with tinting technology. This results in a tinted, translucent coating which shows the texture of the natural stone, which, on its part, has an impact on the final colour.
Outdoor applications of tinted stone coating include socles, masonry façades and balcony walls and flanks. Indoors, the product is suitable for coating walls and the external surfaces of fireplaces and chimney breasts. The product can be applied using a steel trowel or by spraying, for example.
Colours and durability from Finnish bedrock
Using natural stone as a surface material for buildings and construction details is often considered a tempting, but at the same time, an arduous and expensive option. Tikkurila’s solution to this puzzle is a tintable stone coating. The product contains crushed natural stone for creating a beautiful and impressive natural-stone surface both indoors and out.
The standard colours of the stone coating are directly derived from Finnish nature: red granite from Taivassalo, black gabro from Hyvinkää, grey granite from Kalanti and light limestone from Parainen. The standard colours can be used as such. In addition, light limestone and grey granite can be tinted to 25 colours designed for outdoor use and another 25 colours for indoor use. All the colours can be found in the colour cards Yki Aitokivi Real Stone and Tunto Stone. The original colour of the substrate to be treated will always shine through the stone coating slightly so it must be primed using the recommended shade from the colour card.
