|Storage||Protect from frost. The temperature of the product or container may not exceed +35ºC. Do not store in direct sunlight, even under a protective tarpaulin. Tinted product, or a product kept in an improperly closed or half-empty can will not withstand long-term storage|
|Application conditions||The surface to be painted must be clean, dry and solid, the temperature of the air at least
+8 °C, and the relative humidity of the air below 80 %. To avoid colour differencies do not paint under strong sun light or rain.
|Preparation||Unpainted exterior surfaces:
New concrete surfaces must be dry and hardened before treatment. It is recommended that concrete surfaces be allowed to dry for a minimum of one heating period before painting. The new plastering surface must be dry and hardened before painting. The time needed for drying and hardening is affected by, for example, the texture of the plaster (e.g. lime-cement ratio), the drying and hardening conditions and the thickness of the plaster layer.
Remove dirt, dust and salts from unpainted surfaces. Clean mouldy, mossy etc. surfaces by applying Tikkurila Mould Removal from the bottom upwards as instructed. Concrete surfaces cast by using formwork must be mechanically worked, e.g. sand-blasted, to create sufficient surface texture. Remove the glass-like, glossy laitance by, for instance, sand-blasting, using a special grinding stone or high-pressure washing with the help of sand.
Previously painted exterior surfaces:
Remove dirt, dust and salts from the surfaces.
Clean mouldy, mossy etc. surfaces by applying Tikkurila Mould Removal from the bottom upwards as instructed. Remove any flaky, loose or powdery paint layers from the previously painted surface. Organic paints or coatings are removed completely with a Paint Removal solution and pressure washing with hot water or sand-blasting. Choose the removal method according to the strength of the substrate and the type of paint to be removed (e.g. with steel wire brush, by pressure washing with hot water or water-sand washing). Also, remove powdery and weak areas from the plaster or concrete surfaces. Open cracks found near concrete-bars by chipping or by using an angle grinder and a grinding wheel etc. Remove rust from steel and treat with protective paint. Patch opened cracks, holes and crevices to the same level as the surrounding concrete surface with a suitable Finnseco repair mortar, and plaster surfaces with lime-cement mortar.
In the treatment of the substrate that contains asbestos, refer to the national guidelines or local regulations. (In Finland: Council of State statute 975/2004).
Unpainted interior surfaces:
New concrete surface must be dry and hardened before finishing treatment. New plastering surface must be dry and hardened before painting.
Remove dirt, dust and other impurities from unpainted surfaces.
Previously painted interior surfaces:
Remove dirt, dust and other impurities. Wash surfaces with Tikkurila Maalipesu Cleaning Agent according to instructions, if needed. Remove any flaky, loose or powdery paint (e.g. lime paint) layers from the previously painted surface. Sand glossy, well adhering paint coats until matt.
|Patching||Patch opened cracks, holes and crevices to the same level as the surrounding concrete surface with a suitable Finnseco repair mortar, and plaster surfaces with lime or lime-cement mortar. Patches are carefully after treated, and they are left to harden before painting.|
|Painting||Stir KIVITEX Silicate Paint well before use. Reserve enough paint from one batch for one uniform surface to avoid possible colour differences. However, if you have to use paint from various batches, paint overlapping area with a mixture of new and old batch (e.g. 1:1). Arrange so that the overlapping area is situated in an unobserved place.
Protect all surfaces not to be treated such as window panes, stone slabs and ceramic tiles on facades or metal surfaces. Clean paint splashes immediately with water.
On large surfaces, the paint should be applied without interruptions to avoid working seams. Different pore structure and variations in temperature and humidity during application and drying can cause colour varieties.
Mechanical stress can cause visible spots on painted surface. This is a typical feature for all matt facade paints which does not, however, affect the product’s technical performance.
Solid exterior surfaces:
Prime solid and hard surfaces once with a mixture made of Tikkurila Silicate Primer and KIVITEX Silicate Paint (mixing ratio 1:2).
Finish with KIVITEX Silicate Paint at the earliest after 12 hours from priming. KIVITEX Silicate Paint can be diluted max. 10 % with water.
Porous exterior surfaces:
Prime porous and absorbent surfaces like plaster and sand-lime brick surfaces and previously with lime, lime-cement, cement and silicate paints painted surfaces using wet-on-wet system with a mixture made of Silicate Primer and pure water (mixing ratio 1:1).
Undercoat earliest after 12 hours from priming. Kivitex Silicate Paint can be thinned max. 10% with Silicate Primer.
Finishing can be started at the earliest after 12 hours from undercoating. Kivitex Silicate Paint can be thinned max. 10% with water.
Separate priming product is not needed for interior surfaces.
Apply one priming coat of Kivitex Silicate Paint. Finish with Kivitex Silicate paint at the earliest after 12 hours from priming. Kivitex Silicate Paint can be thinned max. 10% with water, if needed.
|Cleaning of tools||Clean tools with water. Tikkurila Tool Cleaner is recommended for removal of hardened paint.|
|Maintenance instructions||Earliest 1 month after finishing the surface can be cleaned using pressure cleaning without cleaning detergent. The cleaning might leave permanent marks on the surface, so the area to be washed must be limited according to the structure line. Loose dirt is recommended to be dry cleaned with a soft brush without abrasion.|
|Maintenance treatment||Surfaces painted with Kivitex Silicate Paint can be re-painted with Kivitex Silicate Paint or Finngard Silicate Paint, see Pretreatment and Application.|
|EU VOC 2004/42/EC-limit value||(Cat A/a) 30 g/l(2010)
Kivitex Silicate Paint contains VOC max. 30 g/l.
