Taika Glaze 2 colour effect, gold-silver
DESCRIPTION A semi-transparent, water-borne special glaze for a two-coloured pearlescent effect.

Application conditions The surface to be painted must be dry, the temperature of the air and the surface at least +10 °C, and the relative humidity of the air below 70 %.
Preparation Unpainted surfaces:
Remove dirt and dust from unpainted surfaces. Make the surface smooth with suitable Presto or Spakkeli filler, if necessary, and sand the dried surface. Remove sanding dust.

Previously painted surfaces:
Wash down previously painted surfaces with diluted Maalipesu cleaning agent, rinse carefully with water and allow to dry. Remove loose paint. Sand hard and glossy paint surfaces to matt. Remove sanding dust. Fill holes and cracks with suitable Spakkeli or Presto filler and sand the dry surface. Remove sanding dust.
Priming Prime with a Tikkurila acrylate paint for walls such as Harmony/Feelings Interior Paint. Apply two coats. Use a short-pile roller designed for smooth surfaces and aim for as thin a roller pattern as possible. Since Taika Pearl Glaze will highlight rather than cover up surface defects such as filled cracks and holes, the primed surface must be as smooth and even as possible.

Because Taika Pearl Glaze is transparent, the colour of the primer will have a critical effect on the final look. The two-colour effect is best brought out on a pale base: the “magic” colour can be seen when the light hits the surface, and, at other times the complementary colour is visible. The subtler the effect desired, the closer the shade of the primer should be to the “magic” colour. If you choose a dark primer, the “magic” colour will be highlighted, but the complementary colour will remain hidden.
Painting Painting a large continuous wall surface:
Stir the Taika Pearl Glaze thoroughly before applying. Use a short-pile roller designed for smooth surfaces to apply the glaze generously in bands of about one metre at a time. Then use the roller to roll out with long upward strokes for as smooth a finish as possible. Aim for as thin a roller pattern as possible and try to apply the glaze evenly throughout.
Use masking tape to cover the borders and remove the tape immediately after painting so cutting-ins will not remain visible.
Apply two coats for a more impressive, perfect finish.

Note that while effect painting with Taika Pearl Glaze is easy even for novices, skill and experience are required to paint smooth, large, even surfaces.

Effect painting:
Paint a small area (approx. 1 m²) at a time. Firstly, use a short-pile roller designed for smooth surfaces, applying the pearl glaze generously. Immediately after, use various design effect rollers, a brush or sponge to make patterns. First practice effect painting on a thick piece of cardboard or some other base.

Taika Pearl Glaze is also ideal for stencil painting.

See Tikkurila’s painting brochures for more ideas and more detailed instructions.
Cleaning of tools Remove excess glaze from tools and clean thoroughly with water and soap. The use of Tikkurila Pensselipesu (Tool Cleaner) is recommended for cleaning hardened glaze.
Maintenance instructions The pearl glaze will achieve its final hardness after 1 month from the painting. Avoid cleaning during this time.
Clean the surface with neutral (pH 6-8) washing –up liquid with soft cloth. Rinse and dry the surface immediately after cleaning.
Maintenance treatment Maintenance painting:
Apply instruction under "previously painted surfaces". If wanted, finish the effect surface with water-dilutable wall paint.
